The Towson University SGA and Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility (CESR) came together to host a 2024 election watch party. The event looks to celebrate democracy and create a positive atmosphere for everyone during the election.

“Tonight’s event is really about creating a space where students can come together and participate in democracy in a fun way,” said Jenna Jalloh, the Director of Government Affairs for the Towson SGA.

The high-energy environment of the University Union Ballroom is decorated in red, white, and blue. A DJ, photo booth, food, crafts, and raffles keep students engaged as election results roll in. CBS’s live election coverage is displayed on a large screen for real-time monitoring.

The event has been promoted across campus leading up to election day, encouraging students to come out. The turnout at the event was approximately 150-200 people.

Morgan Tucker, a student at Towson University, said, “This is my first year voting, so I really want to be involved and engaged in what’s going on.”

The SGA partnered with Charis Lawson, CESR’s Coordinator for Civic Engagement, to create an election night wellness room. This space aims to relieve students’ stress around the election.

“I want people to know their feelings are valid and that they have a space with resources and support during this chaotic time,” said Lawson.

This event provides a space where students feel safe and heard while enjoying time with community members and actively participating in democracy.

Jalloh and other members of the SGA spoke to the crowd, reinforcing the purpose of the event and the power that each voter has. The students in attendance were excited and socializing with each other.
