A Baltimore man was arrested and charged with burglary after police found him hiding in the attic of an Essex home on Thursday night, police said.

Devante James Riley, 26, was charged with first- and fourth-degree burglary along with first-, third- and fourth-degree burglary and theft from a previous case. He is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center with no bail status after his first court appearance Friday, police said.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a home at 12:55 p.m. Thursday in the 900 block of Renfrew Street, Essex, for a burglary in progress after the homeowner saw the suspect walking around his home from his surveillance cameras.

Police officers surrounded the home as the suspect attempted to escape through a window but he retreated back inside. Police initiated a barricade situation and attempted to communicate with the suspect unsuccessfully, police said.

After 10 p.m. officers made their way into the home and apprehended the suspect in the attic, police said.
