Towson has joined campuses across the country in opening all-gender bathrooms. Transgender and gender-nonconforming students applaud this development.

Why it matters

These students report negative experiences — and in some cases feeling unsafe — in bathrooms labeled “men” and “women.” Inclusive restrooms are one important step.

According to experts, some of the most dangerous places on college campuses for transgender and gender-nonconforming students are bathrooms and locker rooms designated for “women” and “men.” Students report feeling unwelcome and — in some cases — unsafe.

Research shows that gender-neutral restrooms are the accommodation that these students care most about on their campuses. But the study found that many campuses don’t have the appropriate facilities — even if they are working on solutions. This mini-documentary examines how students and advocates at Towson University describe the problem and what is being done to help.
