A Towson liquor store clerk fatally shot a 25-year-old man who was attempting to rob the establishment Monday night, police said.

Claude Edward Mayo of the 900 block of Arlington Avenue in Baltimore was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, adding that a second suspect in the attempted robbery was still at large.

Police said Mayo and the second suspect entered Towson Wine and Spirits on Pennsylvania Avenue in Towson at about 6:40 p.m.

Mayo aimed a handgun at the clerk’s head, but instead of retrieving money from the register, the 68-year-old clerk pulled out his own handgun and shot Mayo in the upper body multiple times, police said.

Police said the two suspects fled the scene, but Mayo collapsed a short distance from the store. The second suspect continued to flee the scene, police said.

According to Police, Mayo’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Police said there is no description for the second suspect as they continue to search the area.

The case is still under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Homicide and Robbery Units.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 410-307-2020, or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
