The Maryland Attorney General’s office is investigating a fatal shooting involving Howard County police officers in Columbia over the weekend, authorities said.
County police received a call for service at 12:09 a.m. on Sunday to an apartment building in the 6400 block of Freetown Road. The initial call concerned an adult male threatening to harm himself.
At 12:22 a.m., police said officers confronted the man outside the building. The man approached officers with a knife and refused to comply with commands, leading to officers shooting the man, police said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene after officers attempted life-saving measures. No officers were injured in the incident.
Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has assumed the investigation into the shooting and will provide any follow-up information.
