State officials have opened an investigation into an “officer involved death” that occurred Monday in the Woodlawn area of Baltimore County, local police said.

The incident under investigation by state police and the Maryland attorney general’s office occurred shortly after 2 a.m. at the corner of Englewood and Gilmore streets, where a county police officer exchanged gunfire with a person who was suspected of being part of an armed robbery, police said.

One officer, who was not shot, suffered injuries to his lower body and was transported to an area hospital, police said. Police said a K-9 unit located a dead person shortly after.  They said investigators later found a weapon that may have been tied to the morning’s incident.

The officer who discharged his weapon was placed on administrative leave, police said. It was not clear from the police report whether the officer who was injured was the one who fired his gun.

Police said officers responded to an armed robbery in the 6700 block of Windsor Mill Road at about 2 a.m.

The suspects left the scene and were then involved in a hit-and-run at Dogwood Road and Gwynn Oak Avenue, police said.

After the crash, police said several people bailed out of the vehicle. According to police, one suspect was located by a Baltimore County police officer on the corner of Englewood and Gilmore streets, where shots were exchanged.

Police said the county is cooperating with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division and the Maryland State Police.
