A Baltimore County crossing guard was left in critical condition after being struck by an automobile Tuesday afternoon in Towson, county police said.

The victim, identified as a female, was flown to Shock Trauma after sustaining life-threatening injuries following the collision in front of Cromwell Valley Elementary School, where she was working that afternoon, police said.

According to police, the driver of a 2000 Acura four-door sedan involved in the accident in the 800 block of Providence Road showed no signs of impairment and stayed on the scene following the accident.

The Baltimore County Critical Incident Team is offering emotional support to the staff and students of the school, as the crossing guard was a known member of the community.

The county police Crash Investigation Team is currently investigating to find what factors lead to the crash. The victim remains in critical condition.
