Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski announced Monday that he was appointing a long-time environmental activist as the county’s new chief sustainability officer.

Jennifer Aiosa, the former executive director of Blue Water Baltimore, a nonprofit environmental group, will be charged with leading the county’s effort to mitigate the impact of climate change and oversee sustainability initiatives by the county government.

As the leader at Blue Water, Aiosa led environmental efforts focused on clean water, green storm-water infrastructure, climate resilience and community engagement. She also managed the organization’s annual $3.5 million budget.

Prior to her time at Blue Water, Aiosa served as the vice president and director of programs at Chesapeake Conservancy; a senior scientist for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation; and she held senior roles with the Maryland Department of Planning and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Aiosa obtained her bachelor’s in marine sciences at the University of South Carolina and a master’s in environmental science at the University of Virginia.

Aiosa will takeover in the position that Olszewski created in 2019 to help with the county’s sustainability efforts effective May 3.
