Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is searching for community members interested in serving on the Board of Social Services.

“I encourage dedicated community members who are personally interested in the welfare of the county’s most vulnerable populations to apply to this board,” Ball said in a press release Friday.

The board has nine members who serve three-year terms, Ball said. One member must be from the Howard County Government. The duties of board members include advising on state policies, procedures and programs that apply to Howard County, and evaluating the local director of the Department of Social Services, a state agency.

“The Department of Social Services works every day to support residents in our community who are economically disadvantaged and facing overwhelming obstacles,” said Ball. “Especially during this pandemic, it is critical that we have engaged members of our community to inform and support the DSS and their mission.”

To be eligible you must be a resident of Howard County, and 18 years or older. Applicants also must be interested in the delivery of social services. Board’s meetings are held the third Monday of each month at 5 p.m. in the conference room at the Department of Social Services, 9780 Patuxent Woods Place in Columbia.

The deadline to apply is Friday, Nov. 13.
