Gov. Larry Hogan named his former communication director as his new chief of staff on Tuesday, putting distance between the Republican governor and a scandal involving his former staff leader.
Roy McGrath resigned as Hogan’s chief of staff in August after drawing criticism for reportedly negotiating a six-figure pay-out from his previous job with the Maryland Environmental Service. Critics said his severance pay totaled a year’s worth of his salary. McGrath left the independent state agency of his own accord to lead Hogan’s team for just 11 weeks.
Amelia Chassé Alcivar is returning to Hogan’s administration after previously serving as communications director for his team from 2018 to 2019, and deputy communications director from 2016 to 2018. She left the governor’s office last year to serve as communications director for the Republican Governors Association.
“I’m pleased to welcome back Amelia Chassé Alcivar to our team as chief of staff,” Hogan said. “Amelia brings to the table a deep knowledge of our administration’s priorities and a management record of results that will be invaluable as we continue working to change Maryland for the better.”
Chassé Alcivar released an official statement explaining how she was “deeply honored” to serve in her new capacity on the governor’s team beginning Oct. 26.
“Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work to support the governor’s bipartisan record of protecting the health and safety of our families and our schools, strengthening our economy, and delivering for Marylanders,” Chassé Alcivar said.
Other positions held by Chassé Alcivar include working for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, America Rising PAC, and John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.
