Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski said Tuesday his administration will propose a bill that would allow a delay in the tax sale process.
Olszewski pointed to the economic stress placed on households and businesses because of the deadly COVID-19 as a key reason for the legislation. As it stands, Baltimore County is required by law to hold the tax sale by June 5. The date cannot be altered without legislative action, he said.
“In the midst of this public health crisis, we continue to take unprecedented steps to support our residents,” Olszewski said. “We are optimistic that the County Council will join us in providing property owners more flexibility during this uncertain time.”
If the bill is approved by the County Council, officials said the county would be able to delay the tax sale until October.
Baltimore County properties with unpaid real property taxes, accrued interest or penalties may be auctioned at the County’s annual tax sale.
