Being a sports fan these days is about much more than turning on the television and watching a game. In fact, many fans don’t own a television and never watch a full game. They stream. They dual-screen. They tweet at athletes and coaches. They watch only the most high-stakes action. They have money on the game. And they may care more about how their fantasy roster is faring than how the home team is doing. In this Baltimore Watchdog special report, we examine sports fandom in the digital age. Students in Towson’s sports journalism class teamed up to examine this topic from a variety of angles, including:

How the NFL RedZone caters to thrill-seeking sports fans

How sports fans use social media to (attempt to) communicate with athletes

How online sports gambling is booming

How football dominates the fantasy sports landscape

How fantasy sports scrambles the sports viewing experience
