A Parkton man was fatally shot by a county police officer Nov. 26 after he allegedly threatened to harm a famly member, police said.

Eric John Sopp, 48, of the unit block of Pheasant Wood Court in Parkton was confronted by police on Mount Carmel Road as he was about to drive on the ramp to southbound Interstate 83, police said.

Police said “circumstances occurred” that led to an officer shooting Sopp. Police did not provide further details about the shooting incident.

Police said Officer Page, a 21-year veteran of the force who has had no prior shooting incidents, was placed on routine administrative leave while the case undergoes a review. He works in the Cockeysville Precinct.

According to police, Sopp was reportedly intoxicated when he threatened to harm a relative and possibly himself with a weapon. The woman called police and Sopp drove off in a car. Police located him based on a description of the car given to them by the woman victim.

After the review, the department’s investigation will forward the results to the Office of the State’s Attorney for further review.
