A mother was killed and her 3-year-old son was injured in a five-car collision near White Marsh Friday morning, police said.

County police said the accident occurred on Eastern Boulevard near White Marsh at around 12:30 a.m. The driver of the first car, a Honda Element, reportedly sideswiped another vehicle, causing it to veer into the median and hit a Toyota Corolla head-on, police said.

The Toyota then hit two more cars, whose occupants suffered minor injuries, police said.

Alexis Lashey Steele, 23, and her 3-year-old son, who were in the Toyota, were both transported to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, police said. The woman died later in the center, and her son suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The individual who drove the Honda suffered life-threatening injuries and is still hospitalized, police said.
