Miss Mutzy Rae Daisy joins PD’s K9 unit

The newest member of the Baltimore County K9 unit has officially been named Miss Mutzy Rae Daisy of Baltimore County.

The name was chosen from the family of Amy Sorrells Caprio, one of the departments Fallen Heroes, to resemble Caprio’s old pet named “Mutzy” when she was young.

“Daisy” comes from the newly named pup’s mother, and “Rae” is from where she was born in the Deep Hearted Bloodhounds kennel in Loudonville, Ohio. Rae is a pure-bred bloodhound who will be serving the citizens of Baltimore County as she begins her training to become a search and rescue dog.

According to Amy’s family, Mutzy gave a great sense of security as Caprio underwent her years in school, in the police academy and during any injuries. Amy committed her life to helping others and Rae will train to pick up right where she left off for any unfinished business, police said.

The K9s training program helps to enhance the dog’s natural abilities, such as chasing someone down and giving her a treat and compliments as a reward to get the learned behavior understood by the dog.

The program will help to enhance Rae’s natural born tracking skills by putting her on long trails and having her sniff out a particular smell, police said. Bloodhounds are traditionally used in police work for their tracking skills and their ability to focus, which is resourceful when in need of locating any missing persons.
