What to know before tipoff

Doubleheaders aren’t just for baseball.

The 2019-2020 Towson basketball season begins Tuesday with back-to-back games at SECU Arena. Women’s basketball hosts Penn State (4 p.m., Flohoops), followed by the men’s basketball nightcap against George Washington (7 p.m., Flohoops).

Their seasons begin under very different circumstances. The women’s basketball team won 20 games last season, captured its first-ever Colonial Athletic Association title and returns many of its top players. The men’s basketball team won just 10 games and lost its last five — though several key contributors return.

What’s the outlook for both teams this season? Who are some of the impact players? What does the early season hold? And what are the storylines for opening night? Baltimore Watchdog reporters have answers to these questions and more in our season preview.

Here’s a rundown of the stories you’ll find on Monday:

  • Tommy Parker previews the women’s basketball game against Penn State. Jalon Dixon previews the men’s game against George Washington. And Jordan Tacey covers the novelty of opening the season with a doubleheader at SECU Arena.
  • Timothy Dashiell was at the women’s exhibition game Thursday and shares five things he learned from the pre-season tipoff.
  • Kevin Watson reports on how the women’s team plans to build off its CAA championship season, and John Hack examines what lessons the team learned from playing powerhouse UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Ryan Leshko looks at how the men’s team plans to improve on offense, and Robert Sobus looks at changes on defense.
  • Nick Sterling examines the men’s team’s early season strength of schedule, and Robert Kenly writes about the Charleston Classic and Towson’s history in early-season tournaments.
  • You want features? We have plenty: Brooks Warren on Nukiya Mayo; Brendan Straub on Kionna Jeter; Rachel Veslany and Jill Gattens on Brian Fobbs; Chris Cobb on Dennis Tunstall; and Tim Klapac on the Uyaelunmo brothers.
  • What does the CAA competition look like for Towson? Eric Himmelheber looks at the women’s conference and Tim Utzig the men’s conference.

Check back for coverage of opening night.
