A carbon monoxide leak led to the evacuation of about 60 children and adults from an Owings Mills school Monday, Baltimore County public safety officials said.

One adult was rushed to a local hospital with non-life-threatening symptoms, officials said.

Baltimore County Fire and EMS crews responded at 11:17 a.m. to calls from The Shafer Center, a school for special needs children at the 11500 block of Cronridge Road. Officials found the building with high levels of carbon monoxide, which is a dangerous gas produced from incomplete fuel combustion.

The CO levels began to drop after proper ventilation. Authorities speculate the problem came from the heating system.

The center students and staff were being temporarily housed next door in the Maryland Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program station.

Fire crews began clearing the scene around 1:40 p.m.
