A 28-year-old Baltimore man died Tuesday morning after he was involved in a hit-and-run and shooting incident with a police officer Monday night in a ShopRite parking lot in the 2300 block of Cleanleigh Drive, police said.

Police said the officer shot Derrick Sellman in the upper body after Sellman struck the officer with his black SUV and then attempted to flee the scene.

Police said Sellman, of the 2300 block of Walshire Avenue, was driving erratically across the shopping center parking lot when the officer approached the vehicle to talk to the driver.

Sellman opened his door but then suddenly started driving and either dragged the officer or stuck him, police said. The officer was then hit by another vehicle driving in the other direction.

The officer was able to shoot at Sellman at least once, police said, disabling Sellman, police said.

They said Sellman was the only person in the SUV during the incident. The officer was released from the hospital Tuesday.
