A Sandalwood Elementary School second grade student died Thursday after she was struck by a white work van outside an Essex townhouse community, police said.

Police said 7-year-old Na Tasha Newman of 1000 Punjab Drive in Essex was running down the sidewalk after a group of children when she darted out in front of the van as it began to exit the townhouse community onto South Maryland Avenue. The driver remained at the scene, police said.

Police said the officers immediately began CPR on the child, who was then rushed to Franklin Square Hospital. The incident occurred at about 3:26 p.m. across from the elementary school.
