A 26-year-old Finksburg woman was killed and a friend critically injured in a hit-and-run accident on Hanover Pike in northern Maryland, Baltimore County police said.

Scott Anthony Koreza, 40, Hampstead, was being held Thursday without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center in connection with the accident.

Police said Cana Maree Ratchford of the 2400 block of Sandymount in Finksburg and her 25-year-old friend were standing partially in the travel portion of Hanover Pike in Upperco around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when they were struck by a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck. Another friend had entered the Colonial Inn at 15102 Hanover Pike.

Koreza of the 4600 block of Lower Beckleysville Road in Hampstead was identified as the driver of the truck that struck both women and continued driving south with significant damage to the vehicle, police said. The truck traveled 2.5 miles further down Hanover Pike but stopped with engine trouble. An officer responding to the call saw the truck parked on the side of the road and realized the vehicle matched the description from the incident.

Koreza was charged with hit-and-run violations and driving in an uninsured vehicle. The case was forwarded to the Office of the State’s Attorney for formal charges.

Police said Ratchford was pronounced dead on arrival at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma. The other woman was listed in critical condition.
