A county man was charged in the death of a 2-year-old after police say the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Shaquiel Griffin, 25, of no known address, was charged with leaving a firearm where a minor could gain access, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm by a person with a previous felony conviction and involuntary manslaughter, police said.

Griffin remains held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

Police said the toddler, Tye Flint, was found in cardiac arrest a little after 3 a.m. on Aug. 28 at his home in the 3100 block of  Bero Road in Halethorpe. Flint was later pronounced dead at St. Agnes Hospital within the hour.

Homicide detectives determined Griffin was staying in a spare bedroom on location and had concealed a firearm in the room. Police reported that Flint entered the room after everyone was asleep, found and discharged the gun, striking himself in the head. Griffin retrieved the weapon and fled prior to police arrival on the scene, police said.
