Baltimore County police officers today mourned the death of an officer who was fatally shot 17 years ago.
Sgt. Bruce Prothero, a 12-year veteran of the department at the time, was shot and killed on Feb. 7, 2000 during an armed robbery at a Pikesville jewelry store, police said.
Prothero was shot three times as he chased four robbers attempting to escape J. Brown Jewelers on Reisterstown Road. Prothero was working a second job as a security guard.
Baltimore county police officers wore mourning bands on their badges in honor of Prothero.
Prothero was survived by his wife and five children.
