Dallas Evans was charged with first-degree murder, police said. He was arrested in the 200 block of West 29 Street by detectives, police said.

A police officer reported hearing gunfire on Washington Boulevard at about 7:39 p.m. on Jan. 27, officials said.

Police say when the officer arrived on the scene he found 33-year-old Dontia Akins of the 1200 block of West Cross Street suffering from gunshot wounds and a vehicle attempting to get away.

Officers stopped the vehicle and the occupants inside were detained for questioning, police said.

Akins was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

Evans has been transported to Central Booking.
