La Cakerie, a local bakery that has been serving Towson’s sweet tooth since 2012, will be opening a new store in Bel Air later this month, the owner said.
The bakery held a soft opening last Friday but is still waiting for final inspections from the county before it can officially start serving the public, said Michele Holder, a shop manager at La Cakerie in Towson.
The shop, which also has a location on North Charles Street in Baltimore, is known for its specialty cakes and cupcakes, including gluten free and vegan options.
In addition to its famous cakes, La Cakerie also serves sandwiches, pizza, coffee and other sweets.
“We have a little bit of everything,” said Kelly Sokolis, a shop manager at La Cakerie, Towson. “I think people like our variety of options.”
The Bel Air location will focus more on the sweets side of the menu, Holder said.
“They’re going to have some different menu items than they have here,” Holder said. “They’re geared more toward a sweets crowd. We’re having some specialty milkshakes there. Definitely geared toward the morning coffee crowds. We’ll have some special things for breakfast.”
She adds that the bakery will continue its popular lunch items in addition to new soups and sandwiches.
“Everything is still baked here in Towson and then we’ll deliver daily to Bel Air,” Holder said.
The new shop, which will be located at 22 S. Main St., will be significantly smaller than La Cakerie, Towson, which includes a full kitchen, a to-go window facing the Uptown Towson shops and passing customers, and a small ice cream section. It is also furnished with leather sofas, high-top tables, a stone fireplace and plasma televisions constantly playing The Food Network.
Even though the space will be much smaller, the bakery plans on keeping the same atmosphere and style as the original location with a pink, black and silver color scheme.
Bel Air residents are looking forward to the bakery coming to town, with many of them expressing their excitement in 44 comments on La Cakerie’s soft opening announcement on Facebook.
“That town is super cute and fun to just walk around in so adding a bakery makes it better, especially because it apparently has gluten free cupcakes,” Jordan Levush, 19, a Bel Air resident and Towson University student, said during an interview.
There is always a rush of customers coming in and out of La Cakerie for a simple date with friends or a business meeting, Sokolis said.
She believes that it is the relaxed and open atmosphere that attracts customers and keeps them there for hours at a time. She adds that because La Cakerie is so close to Goucher College and Towson University, it often gets students that come in and do school work in the afternoons.
According to Holder, the business is constantly receiving requests for more locations around the area. She says that Hisley plans on opening more locations throughout Maryland in years to come.
