A man who barricaded himself in an Essex home yesterday after firing shots at another individual surrendered to police and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, county authorities said.

Police said they arrived at the 2100 block of Anthony Avenue at around 11 a.m. after shots had been reported.  Officers spoke with a man who claimed to have been in an altercation with the suspect, who allegedly fired a gun at the man. The man was unharmed, police said.

Police located the suspect in a nearby home alone where police negotiators eventually got the suspect to comply and surrender peacefully, police said.

The suspect faces charges for the alleged assault. His identity will be released following his official charges. Police said the incident remains under investigation.
