The Baltimore County Fire Department rescued an 11-year-old boy who fell down a well on the grounds of a Rosedale McDonalds Sunday evening.

The boy fell 30 to 40 feet while playing with his friend outside of the restaurant on 6315 Kenwood Ave. at about 6:30 p.m., authorities said.

His friend, also an 11-year-old boy, started to fall down the hole as well but was able to escape before completely falling. The opening was stone-lined, yet covered with landscape fabric and mulch, officials said.

The department’s tactical rescue team was dispatched at 6:39 p.m. after the boy’s friend called for help. Among the units included were Texas Station number 17 and confined space teams from Pikesville and Bowleys Quarters volunteer fire companies.

A firefighter was lowered into the well with a rope system where he was able to secure the boy to a harness. At 7:15 p.m. rescue crews lifted the boy and the firefighter to safety, officials said.

The two young boys were transported to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The well belongs to the Rosedale McDonalds and has since been covered with a steel plate by Baltimore County Public Works crews.
