Two Baltimore City school police officers were charged Wednesday following an investigation by the Special Investigation Response Team, police said.
Anthony C. Spence and Saverna Bias have been charged on counts of second-degree assault and misconduct in the office. Spence was also charged with second-degree child abuse, police said.
Akil Hamm, the acting chief of the Baltimore City School Police Department, contacted Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis last week and requested an investigation into the matter after he saw a video of the two officers physically confront an unidentified person, police said.
The Special Investigation Response Team assigned by Davis conducted interviews and gathered evidence before going to the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office, where charges were filed Tuesday evening, police said.
Spence and Bias turned themselves in and were processed at the Central Booking Intake Facility. The Public Integrity Unit of the State’s Attorney’s Office has now taken over the case, police said.
The Baltimore City School Police Department will continue to handle their internal investigation into the incident, police said.
