Towson University students will get to show off their talent Tuesday as part of anan Open Mic Night designed to discourage people from drinking alcohol.
The event, which is being sponsored by the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Prevention Center, the Counseling Center, Alcohol & Drug Peer Educators and the Tri Delta Sorority, will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Paws stage at the University Union on campus.
Acts will range from stand-up comedy and dance numbers to singing and poetry reading. Many of the performances are by students who already have some experience on stage and are looking to gain more exposure.
The Open Mic Night is being put on in an effort to encourage students to have fun on campus and skip out on the bars for a night.
“One of our mottos is to have fun sober,” said Allison Frey, a drug and alcohol health educator at Towson. “Our peer educators teach their peers about drinking responsibly and that you can have fun without alcohol in the mix.”
The health center has sponsored many campus events to continue to push the message of having a safe and sober presence on campus.
“The organization I work for is an amazing organization that strives to create a positive environment on campus,” said Aubree Smith, a junior who is also a lead peer educator for the Alcohol and Drug Education Program. “Through providing alcohol and drug education classes, tabling events on campus, and cosponsoring other peer education group, we aim to create a positive, safe environment for Towson and its students.”
The event is free and will include free food as well as a raffle.
