An Essex man was charged with sexual solicitation of a minor, attempted second-degree rape and attempted third-degree sex offense, police said.

Police said Marc Edward Butt, 40, of the 1000 block of Mace Avenue, began an online relationship with who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl in February. Butt was actually communicating with an undercover Baltimore County detective, police said.

Butt had arranged to pick the girl up from an agreed upon location on Wednesday when he was met by police and taken into custody, police said. Police said an initial search of his person revealed that he had two condoms with him.

A search and seizure later took place at Butt’s home, where police said they found two handguns.

Butt was released on $150,000 bail. An investigation is ongoing, police said.
