Two children suffered minor injuries when they were hit by a car as they tried to cross the street in front of Pleasant Plains Elementary School on Wednesday, police said.
The siblings, a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, were holding hands as they crossed the street when the driver of a Nissan sedan struck the girl, causing her to bring down her brother, police said.
Both children were sent to St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
Police said the incident has been ruled a pedestrian error because the children were not using a crosswalk. The driver remained at the scene and will not face charges, police said.
“This incident is an example why parents need to have a serious discussion with their children about pedestrian safety,” Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said in a statement.
“Today we were fortunate that the driver of the vehicle that hit the children was traveling slowly through the school zone,” Johnson said. “It could have been a tragedy.”
