Senator Barbara Mikulski announced Monday she will not be on the ballot in the 2016 election.
Mikulski, 78, now in her fifth term as a Maryland Democratic senator, became the longest-serving woman in the history of Congress in 2012.
The Baltimore native was elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 and served the senate since 1987.
The veteran senator still has two years left in the current term but told the media she’s not finished with her career.
She made her statement from her home in Baltimore’s Fells Point.
