A Baltimore man died in a car crash early this morning when the 2011 Jeep Patriot he was driving crashed into a street sweeper on Pulaski Highway, police said.

Joseph Riley Armstead, III, 24,  of the 5800 block of Glenkirk Court in Baltimore, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:30 a.m., police said.

Sammie Ford, Jr., 53, the driver of the street sweeper, was not injured, according to initial police reports. Ford is also a Baltimore resident of the 5000-block of Chagrove Avenue.

Police said Armstead was driving eastbound when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2007 Izuzu street sweeper, which was stopped at a red light in front of  the Best Buy store entrance near Rossvile Boulevard.

After the first collision the Jeep continued over the curb until it struck a traffic signal support pole near the intersection, police said.

The police department’s investigation will continue but there are no further details at this time.
